Abstract

The present study examined the teaching beliefs of 20 physical education teachers of public schools in Porto Alegre, Brazil. The nature of the present study was qualitative and, predominantly, etnographic. The author observed teachers in their day-to-day at school, carried out semistructured interviews, and registered his impressions and significant events on a field diary. Teaching beliefs appeared as significant elements of the teaching culture of physical education teachers. Teaching beliefs are a window to the thoughts of teachers on their role in school, appear as strategies for survival in the school environment, and enable teachers to extend their relative autonomy in the exercise of their work. Helping physical education teachers reflect on their teaching beliefs may contribute to the discussion on their academic education.
