Selma takes care of others: the care for the self in Dancer in the Dark

This article aims to find traces of the greek notion of “care for the self” (epiméleia heautoû, in Plato and via Michel Foucault) analyzing Selma’s trajectory in the film Dancer in the Dark, by Lars von Trier. The intention is to build an alternative to the discussions that connect this filmmaker to the subject of “guilt”, seeking in Selma’s processes of subjectivity responses to the impasse she had experienced. The “care for the self” would determine Selma’s existence, and guilt would merely be an accessory of origin.Downloads
