Abstract

This paper investigates the theoretical-epistemological development of altmetrics, based on the analysis of terms, expressions, definitions, and/or concepts presented in scientific literature. For this purpose, it analyzed altmetrics through a literature review, considering papers published in Portuguese, English, and Spanish, indexed in Brapci, LISA, WoS, and Scopus, since the manifesto by Priem et al. in 2010 until 2020. Given the results, it was confirmed that altmetrics is still immature and difficult to define. From the analysis of 485 papers (corpus), we found that altmetrics is named by terms and expressions that have different meanings and that its concepts and definitions are presented from three perspectives: pragmatic, genealogical, and epistemological.
