The unusual diplomatic relationship between Paraguay and Taiwan has been going on for over 60 years. In the 2023 presidential elections, the stance of the Latin American country was challenged by an opposition candidate to the winner, Sebastian Peña, from the Colorado Party. This study seeks to elucidate the historical factors that make up the relationship between both nations and to understand the set of internal and external elements that have been challenging this relationship in recent times. From the perspective of data from productive sectors of the Paraguayan economy, the expansion of Chinese demand for commodities and their international pressure for political isolation of Taipei, what is observed is that Chinese growth becomes increasingly difficult to ignore by Asunción. Similarly, the context of South America within the scope of MERCOSUR and the possibilities of investment in infrastructure such as the Bioceanic Route project are also presented as elements to support a Sino-Paraguayan approach. Finally, it is evaluated to what extent the questioning of the relations between Paraguay and Taiwan can mark the beginning of a new political configuration for Asunción.
