Symbolic boundaries and gender violence in Ciudad Juárez (1993-2023)

This study investigates the impact of physical and symbolic borders on the perpetuation of violence against women in Ciudad Juárez, examining how organized crime and human trafficking contribute to this reality. The research is based on the hypothesis that gender-based violence in the region operates as a mechanism of territorial demarcation and that feminicides may serve as a smokescreen for more complex dynamics of domination and exploitation. The overall objective of the study is to analyze the impact of physical and symbolic borders on the perpetuation of gender-based violence in Ciudad Juárez, considering the role of organized crime and colonial structures in sustaining feminicides. The research adopts a qualitative approach, with documentary and bibliographic analysis, drawing on official data, government reports such as those from the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, international documents, and academic studies. The theoretical framework is grounded in Latin American decolonial feminism, particularly the contributions of Rita Laura Segato, María Lugones, Rosalba Icaza, Lélia Gonzalez, Ochy Curiel, and Verónica Gago. Finally, the results indicate that borders are spaces where patriarchal violence is intensified, and where economic exploitation, human trafficking, and impunity contribute to the perpetuation of feminicides.
