Abstract

Introduction: Health education plays a strategic role in the care of patients with cardiovascular diseases. Objective: The objective was to analyze the health behavior of patients with ischemic heart disease, considering their self-perception of cardiovascular risk factors and motivation for behavioral changes. Method: This is a retrospective cohort study with 98 patients treated at a multidisciplinary ischemic heart disease outpatient clinic in a public hospital in southern Brazil. A visual tool was used to identify self-perception of nine risk factors and to analyze motivation based on the transtheoretical model of behavior. A significance level of p<0.05 was adopted. Results: Hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and physical inactivity were the most identified risk factors, while a diet high in fats showed low recognition. Motivation for behavioral changes was higher among patients who recognized overweight, inadequate medication adherence, smoking, and physical inactivity (p<0.001). Conclusion: Health education provided by an multiprofessional team is essential to promote proper recognition of risk factors and assist in behavioral change.
