INTERPROFESSIONAL WORK WITH FAMILIES OF PATIENTS HOSPITALIZED IN A HOSPITAL IN SOUTHERN BRAZIL

Abstract

Introduction: The Hospital Infection Control Program of the Multiprofessional Residency in Health (RIMS) of the Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil, works in conjunction with Nursing, Pharmacy and Social Service professionals. It carries out, weekly, a socio-educational action with the families of patients admitted to a Multidrug-Resistant Microorganism (MMR) treatment unit. Objective: To report the experience of interprofessional work with the families of MMR patients in a high-complexity hospital to give visibility to the processes of the proposed socio-educational action. Experience report: The pedagogical proposal involves articulating theoretical study and experience through health workshops with family members, understanding the way of thinking, feeling and acting. Learning is based on observation, sharing and problematization of the experience. From this perspective, actions related to the theme of MMR, the importance of hand hygiene, care of household utensils, how to sanitize clothes, the difference between colonization and infection, and taboos regarding social isolation are carried out, also carrying out practical experiences, through the use of alcohol gel and a fluorescent substance, aiming at the validation and guidance of the correct hand hygiene technique. Finally, feedback is provided by the participants, in which it is possible to evaluate the learning achieved. Conclusion: Health workshops offer more effective communication with family members about the care involving MMR patients, the demystification of some concepts, which contributes to the improvement of the quality of life of patients and family members after discharge. The interprofessional approach of guidance to family members and caregivers of patients proves to be a powerful and fundamental activity to promote health education and to aggregate knowledge in professional relationships.
