About the Journal
1. Aims & Scope
The Electronic Journal of Criminal Law and Criminal Policy (Revista Eletrônica de Direito Penal e Política Criminal) is a biannual publication that brings in all its issues original contributions, national and foreign, in the area of criminal sciences.
The aim of the Journal is to disseminate knowledge, offering readers quality works that advance knowledge in the areas of Criminal Law, Criminal Procedural Law, Criminal Policy, and Criminology, focusing on the development of penal knowledge from the dogmatic foundations of legal experience, and targeting professors, researchers, and operators that work in these areas.
The Journal publishes scientific articles, translations of scientific papers and original versions, as well as book reviews and comments on jurisprudential decisions. Considering its international character, the Journal, which is registered with ISSN 2358-1956, accepts papers in Portuguese, Spanish, English, Italian and German.
The journal uses SEER, with submissions, opinions and follow-up of the editorial process in this system. All issues are available online with full articles, which can be read in their entirety.
2. Peer Review Process
a. Papers are submitted to evaluation according to the double-blind peer review method, by at least two external reviewers (who are not part of the journal’s editorial staff), selected by specialty and/or affinity in relation to the thematic content of the papers under consideration.
b. Reviewers must disclose to the editors any conflicts of interest that might influence their opinions on the manuscript, and must declare themselves unqualified to review specific manuscripts if they believe that this procedure is appropriate.
c. The author will not know the identity of the referee(s) and will receive only the formal and material comments of the referees. The editors will ensure the anonymity of the review process.
d. The evaluators have the right to present a favorable evaluation conditioned to the reformulation of the article or similar work, to present suggestions for reformulation, as well as the right to suggest the edition of the reformulated text, as long as the eventual alterations do not affect the content.
e. Opinions will be made by means of a specific form that includes formal evaluation, material evaluation, and editorial decision.
f. The formal phase of the evaluation involves the adequacy of the submitted article to the rules of the Journal. Formal inadequacy implies summary rejection of the article. If the inadequacy can be corrected, the author will undergo a blind review and may rectify the submission if the article is accepted for publication under the material aspect.
g. The material phase of the evaluation is carried out by the referees of the area. It is aimed at evaluating the scientific value of the article, its collaboration with the advancement of the field, and the construction of academic dialogue.
h. After the blind review by at least two external reviewers, the Editors will analyze the results and issue a decision, which may be for acceptance, submission to mandatory corrections, or rejection. If there is disagreement between the two external reviewers, the Editors will be responsible for appointing a third reviewer.
i. Appeals lodged against the positions taken will be submitted to the Journal's Editors, who will decide either monocratically or to the Scientific Council. In any case, the identity of the evaluators will not be revealed to the author of the submission.
j. The journal reserves the right to invite authors to publish in the journal. The invitation will be used to publish works by renowned researchers with relevant prominence in their field. The articles published in this way will be presented in a separate section.
3. Periodicity
Biannual publication, digital PDF format.
4. Open access policy and author fees
This is an open access journal, free and immediate to its content, following the principle that making scientific knowledge freely available to the public supports greater global exchange of knowledge.
The journal does not charge processing, submission, publication, or any other fees, and is an entirely free scientific vehicle.
5. Archiving
This journal adopts the PKP Preservation Network (PKP|PN) and the LOCKSS and CLOCKSS archiving systems.
6. Publication Ethics and COPE guidelines
For ethical reasons, aiming to curb the violation of copyrights, especially through plagiarism, the COPE guidelines are adopted. In this sense, articles submitted to this journal go through anti-plagiarism software, and through analysis regarding possible research misconduct, citation manipulation, and falsification/fabrication of data.
Striving for legality, ethics and transparency, all sources used in the texts must be revealed, and if part of someone else's written or illustrative material is used, permission must be requested.
The identification of plagiarism will determine the immediate rejection of the article.
In the event that the journal's editors become aware of an allegation of research misconduct related to an article published in their journal, they will follow COPE guidelines.
7. History of the journal
Linked to the Department of Criminal Sciences of the Law School of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), the Electronic Journal of Criminal Law and Criminal Policy (REDPPC) was founded in 2013.
REDPPC is a semiannual publication that provides free and immediate access to its content, following the principle that making scientific knowledge freely available to the public promotes greater global democratization of knowledge.
Its objective is to disseminate knowledge by offering readers high-quality works that advance research in the fields of Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure Law, Criminal Policy, and Criminology, with a focus on the development of criminal law scholarship based on the dogmatic foundations of legal experience.
The journal’s target audience includes researchers in Law and related fields, students, legal practitioners in general, and public and legislative policymakers.
The journal accepts original manuscripts in Portuguese, Spanish, English, Italian, and German.
