This study was based on the presupposition that people are the essential principle of organizational dynamics. They are the work team’s base and they need to be motivated for their actions. Teams can have differentiated degrees of autonomy. Many of them are self-managing, that is, their members have certain autonomy to decide what and how to do their work, as well as they are responsible for the results. These teams are the object of this study. We decided to verify if work in such teams can stimulate people’s motivation and why. We understand motivation as an energy that impels people in the direction of something. Firstly, the literature on the subject was analyzed, specially the socio-technical approach and some questions about motivation. In addition, a field research was done involving 115 workers from several Brazilians organizations, who were doing postgraduate programs in a business school in Rio de Janeiro, in 2003. The results of the field research indicated that work in self-managing teams influences positively people that had already this experience, as well as it creates a good expectation in those that had never participated of such teamsDownloads
