This article focuses on the acquisition of writing, specifically the knowledge about the alphabet, in the phase prior to formal literacy, which occurs from the 1st year of Elementary School, based on data obtained through the observation of children in the 5th period of Early Childhood Education from a public school. The methodology used was that of participant observation. The objective was to observe the process of the appropriation of knowledge of writing in the activities proposed by the teacher by the learning children. The observed behavior indicated that the still incipient knowledge about the Brazilian Portuguese alphabet, according to the established orthographic conventions, leads to typical memorization strategies of this phase, referred to as pre-literacy or holographic (Ehri; Snowling, 1998).
