ABSTRACT: Metalanguage and literacy: intervention effects in written language This research investigates the influence of an intervention program with metaphonological and metasyntactic ludic activities on the development of reading and writing abilities. Forty-four children from second year of elementary public school, aged from 8 to 12 years and divided into experimental group and control group, participate in this research. Intervention is applied only in the experimental group. Assessment tasks are applied in writing, reading, phonological awareness and syntactic awareness before and after the intervention. Student's T-test is applied for data assessment. Results show significant pre-test and post-test differences in word writing tasks and metaphonological abilities for the experimental group. In reading tasks and metasyntactic abilities, both groups make significant progress. The effectiveness of the intervention program shows to be possible to recover written language delays in children of the early years of elementary school in real classroom situation. The original research in this study has continually supported research and publications in this field of study.
