This work describes and analyzes the spelling of the phonological forms /u/ and /l/ in postvocalic position, focusing on (ortho)graphic errors of phonological, morphological and derivatives of /l/ diphthongs. The data of this study were extracted from the ‘Banco de Textos de Aquisição da Linguagem Escrita (BATALE)’ and were produced by students of the 1st to 3rd year of Elementary School. The results show that the differences between the diphthongs, observable in the relationship between the phonological, phonetic and orthographic levels, have repercussions on the spellings produced by the children. The highest incidence of errors was observed in the spelling of diphthongs derived from /l/, which contributes to the discussion regarding the phonological representations of this structure constructed by children. It also suggests, with the support of phonological development data, that the rhyme VL postulated for adult grammar seems to have VV status in children’s phonology, being liable to restructuring from the consolidation of orthographic writing. The results relative to morphological diphthongs show the effect of speech, especially for first conjugation verbs, and also the input of orthographic information, through overgeneralization data. Phonological diphthongs are those with more stable spellings thanks to its phonology-orthographic correspondence.
