The Vioxx’s lessons for the science journalism of Veja and Time magazine

Abstract

Qualitative analysis of the news story published in the first semester of 2005 by Time and Veja on the controversy unfolding Vioxx’s market withdrawal. Journalists questioned the ethics of the manufacturers, the FDA, the scientific researches as well as the habit and tendency of health consumption, rescuing one of the noblest tasks of science journalism: to bring to discussion the contradictory and the interests linked to the area’s politics and decisions.

Lia Hecker Luz, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte

Mestre em Comunicação Social pela Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul, é autora da dissertação A Pílula da Longevidade à Venda nas Páginas de Veja. Foi docente do curso de jornalismo da Unisinos e trabalhou durante seis anos no jornal Zero Hora, dois dos quais junto ao Caderno Vida. Já participou de diversos cursos de jornalismo científico, incluindo o 2º. Jack F. Ealy Workshop on Science Journalism. É doutoranda do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Ciências Sociais da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte.
