A distrofia muscular de Duchenne é uma doença neuromuscular, hereditária, recessiva, causada por mutações no gene da distrofina. Clinicamente, caracteriza-se por fraqueza muscular progressiva e simétrica. O diagnóstico é feito pela biópsia muscular com imuno-histoquímica e o tratamento tem a finalidade de retardar a progressão da disfunção muscular, já que uma causa frequente de óbito é a insuficiência cardiorrespiratória.
