Abstract

Introduction: Obesity is a worldwide public health problem. It is a chronic, non-communicable, multifactorial disease characterized by excessive accumulation of body fat. Bariatric and metabolic surgery is an effective intervention for the treatment of weight loss in people with obesity, which requires behavioral changes. Objective: To assess the psychological well-being of preoperative patients in a bariatric surgery program. Method: This is a cross-sectional study with a convenience sample of 41 patients who joined the Bariatric Surgery Program at the Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre in 2023. The BariTest instrument was used to obtain data for descriptive analysis. Results: The overall well-being score of the sample was in the 87.8 percentile. When analyzing the constructs individually, most of the sample was found to be in the 50th percentile: Mood (75.6 percentile), Eating Behavior (78 percentile), Quality of Life (58.5 percentile), Relationship with Body Weight (56.1 percentile); Alcohol Consumption (97.6 percentile) and Social Support (87.8 percentile). Conclusion: In general, the patients showed overall psychological well-being and in the 6 constructs assessed. However, the aspects relating to Quality of Life and Relationship with Body Weight require greater attention from the care team in order to prepare them more effectively in the preoperative period of bariatric surgery.
