About the Journal

Focus and Scope

Revista GEARTE [GEARTE Journal] is an electronic publication of academic-scientific nature, edited by the Research Group on Education and Art (GEARTE), linked to the Graduate Program in Education of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. Its purpose is to disseminate the production of Brazilian and foreign researchers in the field of Visual Arts Education who focus on the relationship between education, art, language and technology, in dialogue with different theoretical contributions, aiming to enrich the interdisciplinary discussion of knowledge in the areas of Education and Visual Arts.

The journal publishes original works in Portuguese, Spanish and English resulting from theoretical studies, research, reflections and contemporary debates. It brings as a differential a section dedicated to Visual Essays and Arts-Based Research results (Arts-Based Research – ABR; Investigación Basada en las Artes – IBA; Pesquisa Educacional Baseada em Arte – Arts-Based Educational Research – ABER). It publishes articles, visual and audiovisual essays, verbal-visual testimonies, poetic essays and audio interviews. As an online journal, there is the possibility of including other forms or formats such as videographic, for example.

GEARTE Journal is organized into thematic sections with contemporary subjects in order to focus on different theoretical and methodological approaches. It maintains continuous flow of submissions and calls, for a specific period, for specific topics.

Peer Review Process

GEARTE Journal accepts articles, visual and audiovisual essays, results from Arts-Based Research (ABR), verbal-visual testimonies, poetry essays, reviews and audio interviews for publication. It receives individual papers and proposals from thematic dossiers. It refuses papers that are reports of experiences without a theoretical reflection; research projects or reports; literature review; texts with little theoretical consistency; or even outside the area of the visual arts and the interface with education; outside the submission rules of GEARTE Journal; and with many language errors. The texts must follow the rules of the Journal and be posted directly on the web site.

The evaluation process is carried out through blind peer evaluation, in which the submitted work is sent back, without reference to the author, to two evaluators, guaranteeing the anonymity of both parties, that is, the scientific reviewers do not know the identity of the authors of the texts, nor the authors know the identity of their reviewer. In this procedure, at least two experts from states or countries other than the author state or country will analyze the work. Thus, the geographic diversity of authors as well as of reviewers is favored.

The evaluation of both the individual works and those of the thematic section comprises three phases. In the first phase, the text is sent to two reviewers, (specialists in the area or approach of the article under evaluation). In the second phase, the editors forward the texts that obtained two favorable opinions to the publication; they return to the authors the texts that obtained two unfavorable opinions; send to a third evaluator texts that have doubt or nonsense in the evaluation; afterwards, send the authors the texts to which the evaluators have made suggestions for modifications, as a condition for publication. The third stage consists of evaluating the modifications made by the authors, when necessary, and forwarding the approved texts for language revision and for normalization.

The papers will be considered approved when they obtain two positive opinions according to four main criteria of arbitration: (1) critical reflection on contemporary problems of the area; (2) interest, relevance and originality of the text; (3) linguistic adequacy; (4) formatting, indication of sources and authors quoted according to submission model. Either hypothesis of non-adequacy is justified by a descriptive opinion. The journal accepts research articles already published in Annals of events, so long as they have been expanded and revised.

The proposal of thematic section can be made by a researcher who will invite researchers in the thematic area to submit articles. It is important to have at least one article from a foreign author and that the other articles - amongst seven and ten texts - are from authors linked to different institutions. The organizer, in proposing the thematic section, will give a brief description of the theme including objectives and intended approach. The articles must be submitted by the website and will be evaluated by reviewers, following the procedures of the Journal.

The journal may also encourage certain themes, invite researchers to send texts, in a much lower proportion than the texts evaluated and under the condition that it is an important contribution to the area.

Publication Frequency

GEARTE Journal, from 2014 to 2021, ran every four months, publishing an annual volume, consisting of three issues, which are organized around a theme. As of 2022, the works are being published in the continuous modality in an annual volume no longer consisting of three issues. The continuous publication aims to speed up the dissemination of knowledge produced in the scope of the Journal, as there is no need to close a four-monthly issue.

Open Access Policy

The journal provides readers free and immediate access to its content, following the principle that scientific knowledge freely available to the public supports a greater global democratization of knowledge.

There are no fees for submission, evaluation or publication of the works.

Conflict of Interest

Conflict of interest may exist when authors, reviews or editors have interests that can interfere with the elaboration or review of manuscripts. It may also be of personal, commercial, political, academic or financial nature.

The authors must recognize in the manuscript all the financial support and other financial or personal connections regarding the research.

The rapporteur must report to the editors any conflict of interest that could influence his opinion on the manuscript, and, if necessary, declare himself not qualified to review the article.

If the authors are not sure of what may constitute a potential conflict of interest, they must contact the editorial department of the Journal.

Plagiarism policy

The Journal uses the following plagiarism detection tools: Google, Plagium, Plagiarism Detect.
