Abstract

Studies have demonstrated that the Brazilian history of science teaching has been underexplored in theses and dissertations. The existing ones in general use as reference studies which have become paradigmatic and have presented a hegemonic description of the pre-1950’s period. The purpose of this article is to question this description. In this research on the history of Chemistry as a school subject in a secondary school of the state of Santa Catarina, in the context of the history of school disciplines, I found out that in a few Jesuit schools in southern Brazil, the teaching of science had different characteristics than those described in most researches related to the first half of the Twentieth Century.
