Ideology and Discourse

Abstract

In this artic1e I will first present the traditional Marxist concept of ideology with its negative and positive meanings, and show the recent debate about this concept. Second, I will discuss the concept of discourse, which begins from a poststructuralist position going into a Foucaultian analysis, and then refer to the
viewpoints of some contemporary authors. After presenting this theoretical discussion of ideology and discourse, I will try to relate these two concepts, showing possible connections between them. This will also be based on the works of contemporary authors. The main purpose of this discussion about ideology and discourse is to raise theoretical issues about these concepts and provide a basis for understanding critical education and cultural theories. This discussion can also help towards a better understanding of how these two concepts have influenced criticaI educational work.
