Abstract

The article presents some of the main aspects of the poetics of the Italian writer Lalla Romano (1906-2001) such as the relationship between image and word, memory and autobiography, poetry and prose in a work that defies classification in traditional literary genres. Lalla Romano's novels are described by their main critics as Vittorio Sereni, Cesare Segre, Giulio Ferroni, Paolo Di Paolo, Eugenio Montale, among others. Although Lalla Romano has been translated into the main modern languages, her prose remains unpublished in Portuguese and, seeking in part to remedy this gap, we present the translation of the first nine chapters of Tetto Murato, Pavese prize in 1957, a novel that takes place in the years of resistance to fascism and has a complex atmosphere of mystery and secrecy, of undeclared elective affinities and of the unspoken.
