O artigo aborda o ensino secundário público na cidade do Rio Grande durante o período imperial. A pesquisa identificou e analisou a parca oferta de aulas públicas que funcionavam no Gabinete de Leitura do município, a partir de dados coletados na imprensa local e em documentos da instrução pública. Nesse sentido, o artigo propõe uma reflexão sobre os aspectos histórico-educativos que levaram à constituição e ao término da oferta de ensino secundário público na cidade ao longo do século XIX.
