Dance and schooling: propositions in the brazilian Physical Education periodical press in the 1930s and 1940s
Abstract
This study examines how the theme of dance circulated in the Physical Education periodical press of Brazil during the 1930s and 1940s. It is grounded in cultural history theory, emphasizing the concepts of tactics, strategy, and school culture. Methodologically, it uses documentary criticism and the evidentiary paradigm. Four Physical Education journals published during this period serve as primary sources, complemented by early 20th-century U.S. educational folk dance materials, to illustrate that the Brazilian periodical press disseminated early ideas about dance education in Brazil that were primarily based upon an already-established U.S. educational folk dance model. Altogether, this study reveals a widespread Brazilian effort to legitimize dance as school knowledge, situated within a wider cultural project of educational modernization and national identity building.
