Abstract

In this work we address experiences with using newspapers as a source, emphasizing records related to the history of school uniforms at Liceu Maranhense (1894-1898). The objective is to understand to what extent the representations about the lycée school uniform contained in press discourses place newspapers as privileged sources for delving into school material culture. The theoretical-methodological assumptions of Cultural History are used, helping us in documentary and bibliographical research, using materials available in the Digital Hemeroteca of the National Library and works by authors such as: Chartier (1991); Barros (2019); Pesavento (2012); Author 1 (2024); Author 2 (2012a; 2012b on historiographical sources; Castro (2013); Julia (2001), on school culture and school material culture; and Ribeiro e Silva (2012); Dussel (2016), on school uniforms. The research reveals the importance of periodicals in the denaturalization of objects that make up school cultural material.
