TENSIONS AND TRANSFORMATIONS IN VOCATIONAL EDUCATION IN PELOTAS DURING THE FIRST HALF OF THE 20TH CENTURY

Abstract

This article is part of the reflections from the author's doctoral thesis and explores the relationship between vocational education and urbanization in the city of Pelotas, in Rio Grande do Sul. The analysis, based on bibliographic and documentary references, examines the connections between vocational education and urbanization in Pelotas, highlighting how educational policies shaped the city and its social dynamics. The expansion of the city brought with it discourses in defense of vocational education. The establishment of a vocational school, like the city itself, became a field of tensions. Located on the outskirts of the urban perimeter that gave rise to the working-class neighborhood of Fragata, the school also developed alongside its surroundings. The research further contextualizes vocational education within national modernization projects, showing its impact on maintaining social hierarchies and the organization of the city.
