Abstract

This study investigates the role of the Jesuits in the policy for the natives of the lands of Brazil, ordered by King Dom João III, which is included in the Regiment of Tomé de Souza. It analyzes the manuscript of the Rules which is located in Codex 112, of the Arquivo Histórico Ultramarino (AHU), at Lisbon. It also analyzes, in Jesuit letters, the attempt to implement the policy by the clergy of the Society of Jesus and the confrontation with local culture. Michel Foucault's studies are used for the analysis of the documents on the transition from sovereign power to disciplinary power and the genesis of pastoral power.

Paulo Romualdo Hernandes, Universidade Federal de Alfenas

Tem Graduação e Licenciatura em Filosofia pela Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Campinas (1993). Possui Mestrado (2001) e Doutorado (2006) em Educação pela Universidade Estadual de Campinas, na área de Educação, Conhecimento, Linguagem e Arte. Como pesquisador tem experiência na pesquisa nos seguintes temas: Teatro de José de Anchieta, história da educação, jesuítas, Brasil Colônia. Como docente tem atuado em Filosofia, Ética, Filosofia da Educação, História da Educação, Fundamentos da Educação e Metodologia do Trabalho Científico, entre outras disciplinas. Publicou o livro O Teatro de Anchieta. Arte e Pedagogia no Brasil colônia pela editora Alínea com apoio da FAPESP. Membro permanente do programa de pós-graduação stricto sensu profissional História Ibérica da Universidade Federal de Alfenas. Membro permanente do programa de pós-graduação stricto sensu em Educação da Universidade Federal de Alfenas. Membro da Sociedade Internacional de Estudos Jesuíticos.
