Hannah Arendt e a educação progressiva: a construção de uma situação retórica

O ensaio de Hannah Arendt intitulado “A crise na educação”, publicado na década de 1950, atribui o fracasso da educação escolar nos Estados Unidos à corrente educacional denominada educação progressiva e à influência do Pragmatismo. Por ser elaborado originalmente na forma de conferência, o texto contém várias lacunas no tratamento desses temas. Este artigo procura suprir tais lacunas por meio de fontes historiográficas com o propósito de mostrar que Arendt seleciona determinados fatos para construir uma situação retórica – definida como uma situação problemática que chama a atenção da opinião pública – para a qual o ensaio é uma resposta argumentativa. O artigo conclui que o objetivo de “A crise na educação” não é discorrer sobre a história da educação, mas sobre as relações entre adultos e crianças na sociedade contemporânea, assunto que deve ser analisado à luz dos conceitos arendtianos.
