Abstract

In the late 19th century, the state of Pará experienced major political, economic and social changes, culminating in the cultural transformations of the Belle Époque and the need to modernize its education. This paper investigates the presence and status of the French language in Pará’s education then, following its “traces” (GINZBURG, 2003). Evidence shows its double importance: regarding curricular offering, French was a priority in comparison with other subjects, and as to demand, it was also the most requested course. Finally, a parallel is drawn with current reforms, which impose the same fragmented vision of education to maintain the division between an elite that reproduces its status and the rest of the population, relegated to a training focused on its “utility” for work. This includes determining the “language of the market”, English, as the only reference throughout the country, leaving the task of creating eventual language policies to the states.
