Abstract

The study developed composites of green high-density polyethylene (HDPE), babassu mesocarp (MB) (1.5% and 3.0%), with and without polyethylene grafted with maleic anhydride (PEgMA) (3.0%), with the aim of analyzing its application as a material in civil construction. The composites were produced in a single-screw extruder and molded by injection. The morphology of the composites, tensile, chemical and impact resistance and analysis of variance were evaluated. The composites presented a good finish, homogeneous surface and color change due to the addition of MB. The results indicated the existence of MB agglomerates and a better distribution of charge in the matrix with the incorporation of PEgMA. Regarding mechanical properties, the biocomposites showed lower deformation, higher yield stress and elastic modulus. The ductility, yield stress and elastic modulus were improved after exposure to acidic and basic media, suggesting a possible crystallization process. Based on the results, MB has potential use for developing composites.
