Abstract

The use of residues seems to be a suitable alternative to reduce the impact of the consumption of natural resources as well as of the reduction of disposal sites, considering the growing volume of discarded waste worldwide. This is the case of the rubber residues generated from the retreading of tires. The objective of this article is to discuss some properties of concrete blocks for interspersed pavement made with partial replacement of the aggregates for tire residues. The levels of incorporation of rubber residues were 8%, 10%, and 12% in volume. The properties investigated were compressive strength, water absorption, and impact resistance. The results have shown a decrease in the compressive strength. Regarding water absorption, it was not possible to conclude that this property is negatively affected. Finally, the blocks had a high capacity for energy absorption (tenacity). Therefore, the results indicate the feasibility of using tire residues for producing concrete interspersed blocks for pavings with light load demands.
