Abstract

I present here a reflection that derives from my previous studies on photography produced by artists in the 1960s and 1970s, focusing on what I call transvestism, a procedure in which the artist creates fictions of the self from a more or less explicit characterization. Self-image, identity distensions that, somehow, also fabricate subjectivities and touch on significant issues both in the social world – gender and sexuality, family members, artistic or theoretical references, social and cultural stereotypes – and artistic ones, such as the destabilization of the figure of the genius artist, a theme that dialogues with other questions of the period in the breaking of conventions.
