What the waters do not carry away? Decolonial ecofeminist inspirations for coexisting in times of crisis

The floods that impacted Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, in 2024, urge us to critically reconsider how we organize collective life and construct dialogues within diversity. Grounded in engagement within shelter spaces for individuals affected by the disaster, this essay seeks to critically examine human and non-human relationalities in the context of adversities driven by a socio-environmental catastrophe. We foreground key nuances of the contemporary political-ecological crisis. Our analysis draws upon field diary, serving as empirical grounding for the ensuing reflections. Through Critical Social Psychology and Decolonial Ecofeminism, we explore possibilities for reimagining forms of (co)existence, relationality, and conviviality. As pathways to transformation, we advocate for investing in the interweaving of subjectivities, collectivities, and shared spaces, where hope, resistance, and the pursuit of dignity are cultivated in community practices, fostering alternative modes of existence that disrupt the epistemic and material foundations of capitalist and colonial domination.
