Abstract

Contemporary feminist novelists in Jordan are raising issues of emancipation, patriarchal society, violence against women and social attitudes in unaccustomed ways unknown earlier in the country. This is embedded within the political and socio-economic developments taking place in the country since 1990. The main aim of this scenario is to explore and to re-think the space-gender nexus in the new women’s novel using geo-hermeneutical approaches.

Author Biography

Ala Al-Hamarneh, Assistant Professor for Human Geography, Senior Researcher at “Center for Research on the Arab World (CERAW)”, Institute of Geography, Johannes Gutenberg-University of Mainz, Mainz, Germany

Dr. Ala Al-Hamarneh, a German scholar of Jordanian Arab origin, holds a Ph.D. in Human Geography. His fields of research include international migration, urbanization processes, international tourism, internationalization of higher education and globalization of services, and geo-hermeneutics in film and litereture. He has published on Islamic tourism, tourism and security, Palestinian refugee camps, return migration, postmodern geographies, urban developments, higher education and Arab cinemas. The GCC countries, Egypt, Jordan, Tunisia and Germany belong to his regional focus of research. He has been affiliated as researcher and consultant with various international organizations. His last co-editor volume “Islam and Muslims in Germany” (2008, Brill) won the US "Outstanding Academic Title Award" 2008 by Choice Magazine. Two edited volumes are due to be published in 2017; “International Tourism Development and the Gulf Cooperation Council States” (Routledge) co-edited with Marcus Stephenson, and “Neoliberale Stadtentwicklung in der Arabischen Welt” (Manuskript Verlag) co-edited with Nadine Scharfenort and Jonas Margraff.
