Abstract

In the book "Teoria do Poder Global" (Theory of Global Power), José Luís Fiori revisits his published work, integrating his knowledge as a sociologist, economist and political scientist to unveil a celebrated interpretation of the transformations of power in international relations. A thorough analytical review of Fiori's work (2024) was conducted, with the central objective of presenting the redefinitions of global power and shifting the conjunctural interpretation of the search for balance to an assessment that there is a logic, inherent in international power relations, of permanent conflict and management of uncertainties, both in wars and in market dynamics. The review under scrutiny here highlights the author's rejection of economicist or evolutionist interpretations of capitalism, emphasising political decisions and structural hierarchies as key factors. By examining the historical trajectory of United States hegemony and the limits of its military interventions, the work highlights the contradictory nature of the unipolar order and the emergence of new powers, especially China and Russia. The conclusion drawn therein asserts that Fiori's theory of global power synthesises a substantial bibliography, thereby facilitating the articulation of a foundational theoretical proposition for interpreting the relationships between power, historical time, and development in the interstate capitalist system.
