Abstract

This review focuses on the analysis of the book Brazil's International Activism: Roles of an Emerging Middle Power, focusing on the theoretical and methodological contributions of this work to the field of International Relations. The author Monika Sawicka explains Brazilian foreign policy using Role Theory as the theoretical framework of her constructivist analysis model, which relates the concepts of identity, status and roles. The time frame includes the first two terms of President Lula da Silva and the first term of President Dilma Rousseff. The aforementioned Brazilianist argues that Brazil's behavior from 2003 to 2014 was marked by the performance of roles aimed at increasing the country's status on the international scene, which were also influenced by Brazil's identity as an emerging middle power. The inductive method applied involves the analysis of various data, such as speeches, interviews and practices of decision-makers. This is a work with the potential to become an obligatory reference in the understanding of Brazilian foreign policy.
