The BRICS seem to be inaugurating a new phase in the evolution of the group from which the discussion regarding the enlargement of the bloc has deepened. In this sense, it is worth asking ourselves: How have the conversations for this expansion of membership developed? What are the motivations of each of the members of this quintet to advance or not in this process? On the other hand, what are the motivations pursued by those states that have shown interest in joining this bloc? From a methodological point of view, the work focuses on the analysis of two variables: motivations of the member states and motivations of non-member states. The study focuses on the six candidates who were formally invited to join the bloc during the XV annual Summit held in South Africa in August 2023: Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates.
