Abstract

International empirical research has focused on the investigation of which capital structure school best explains corporate practice. These schools frequently contradict the static equilibrium theories – either based on tax issues or agency costs – and those based on informational assimetry. This paper uses two different econometric models on the São Paulo Stock Exchange data during the period 1997 – 2002 to investigate which theoretical approach best fits the data. Results show that the pecking order theory is more robust as to the explanation of capital structure in Brazil than its competing counterparts.
