Keywords:
Journalism. João do Rio. City. Poverty. History.Abstract
Using the French belle époque as a model, Rio de Janeiro, in the turn of the XIXth century to the XXth century, suffered the transition to an urban capitalist order. In this context, the reporter and writer João Paulo Barreto - João do Rio - walked around the city, observed parts of the society that have seldom appeared in books and newspapers. In A alma encantadora das ruas, he wrote a chapter about many ways of poverty and exploitation present in the city. The objective of this article is to study the representations of poverty as shown in João do Rios book and also reflect about the journalistic text as a simbolic media - reflection of a time and a culture.
