Shelf arrangement, Call number, Book number, Bibliographic classification systemsAbstract
The study discusses the adoption of bibliographic classification systems for the shelf arrangement in the American context from the turn of the 19th to the 20th century, and the configuration of the call number as a model composed of the association among the collection number, the class number and the book number. It seeks to clarify the call number historicity and the criticisms directed at it. The work is based on a literature review on the theme, underpinned by group and individual research, started in 2012, which, since then, have resulted in academic papers, book, conference papers and journal articles. The text begins with the discussion of the meanings linked to the use of bibliographic classification systems for shelf arrangement. Next, it debates on the structure of the call number as a model that operationalizes arrangements in systems of relative localization, mobilizing, particularly, the intense production of reflections aimed at proposing solutions for the book number composition. Finally, it revisits some criticisms to bibliographic classification systems and in association with the call number. As final considerations, it highlights the current aspect of shelf arrangement, especially when the direct experience of the public with the collections is desired, given the enunciation function of spatialized arrangements, function which encourages the significant and creative exploration of the collections.
