TERMINOLOGIA EM LIBRAS E PRÁTICA INTERPRETATIVA: O PAPEL DOS SINAIS-TERMO NA MEDIAÇÃO ENTRE LIBRAS E LÍNGUA PORTUGUESA

Abstract

This article discusses the interfaces between terminology, term-signs, and translation in the context of Brazilian Sign Language (Libras), focusing on linguistic mediation in educational settings. It is based on the understanding that term-signs constitute linguistic units responsible for representing specialized concepts, playing a central role in knowledge organization. Drawing on studies of Libras terminology and on the use of term-signs in the description of syntactic structures in bilingual education for deaf students, the paper reflects on how these elements may contribute to translation and interpreting processes between Libras and Portuguese. It argues that the work of translators and interpreters requires not only linguistic equivalence but also conceptual mastery of the content. In this sense, terminological systematization contributes to greater accuracy in interpreting, particularly in the teaching of Portuguese as a second language for deaf students. The study concludes that the integration of terminological studies and interpreting practice expands the possibilities for knowledge mediation in bilingual contexts.
