Pela lei dos contrastes: José Clarana e as relações raciais entre as Américas

O artigo se debruça sobre um intelectual de vários nomes e poucas informações: José Clarana, James Bertram Clarke, Jaime C. Gil. Nascido em lugar incerto e formado pela Universidade de Cornell, nosso personagem viajou por muitos países, incluindo o Brasil, onde morou entre 1916 e 1920. Ao acompanhar de modo articulado suas ideias e sua trajetória, ainda pouco estudadas, busca-se demonstrar como, na circulação entre diferentes contextos, constituíram-se suas interpretações sobre as relações raciais no Brasil e como suas próprias formas de pertencimento (nome, nacionalidade e raça) foram se modificando ao longo do percurso. A pesquisa baseia-se em materiais de arquivo, textos de imprensa assinados pelo autor em revistas como The Crisis, editada por W.E.B. Du Bois, além de um livro publicado em português em 1919.
