FOLLOW-UP CONSULTATION FOR THE COPPER INTRAUTERINE DEVICE (IUD) INSERTED IN THE POSTPARTUM AND IMMEDIATE POST-ABORTION PERIOD

Abstract

Objective: To develop and validate an audiovisual educational technology (video) containing guidelines on postpartum and post-abortion copper intrauterine device (IUD) follow-up consultations to qualify the performance of professionals (physicians and nurses) in Primary Health Care (PHC). Method: The study was developed within the 12 Community Health Service (SSC) Units of the Conceição Hospital Group (GHC), in four phases: 1) Creation and production of an instructional video; 2) Pilot research; 3) Presentation and validation of the video with the participating professionals (physicians and nurses from the SSC); 4) Finalization of the video editing after analysis of the validation process. The Content Validity Index (CVI) was used to validate and analyze the material, with a CVI > 0.75 being considered valid. The professionals' knowledge on the study topic was also assessed through pre and post-tests. Data collection was performed online (Google Forms). Results: Eight physicians, 14 nurses, and five medical or nursing residents participated in the study. After watching the video, the proportion of professionals who said they knew what to do during an IUD follow-up/review consultation increased by 86.6%. The feeling of being able to carry out the postpartum or post-abortion IUD follow-up/revision consultation increased from 40.7% to 88.9%; 93% reported that the video helped them perform future consultations, and 96% reported having learned something new. The video was considered valid in this sample researched according to the IVC. Conclusion: The educational video created in the process of this research was validated by a sample of PHM professionals. A flowchart with information was also created, based on the participants' suggestions. These materials are available (free access) and are widely disseminated to improve the training of professionals in IUD follow-up consultations.
