Abstract

Delirium is a prevalent condition in a hospital setting, and advances in its understanding have not yet translated into clinical practice. This study aimed to present the development process of a Health Education Technology in the form of a Guidance Manual on the possibilities of interventions by the multiprofessional team for delirium management in Adult Intensive Care Units (ICU-A). The study also aimed to describe the main interventions recommended in the scientific literature and discuss the role of the multiprofessional team in these strategies with patients and their families. An integrative literature review was conducted using the databases US National Library of Medicine (PubMed), Web of Science, Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), and Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde (BVS), including the Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature (LILACS) and the Nursing Database (BDENF). Original publications with full text available from 2017 to 2022 in Portuguese, English, and Spanish were included. The final selection resulted in 18 articles, identifying eight themes of interventions: ABCDEF bundle; sedation, pain and agitation control; delirium assessment; patient mobilization; non-pharmacological and environmental measures; individualized strategies; family participation and education; team education and communication. It was observed that there are still few studies describing delirium management actions in critical patients, emphasizing the need for more research to contribute to the visibility of the topic and improvement of hospital care. The conducted review informed the development of a pilot project for the Guidance Manual, titled "Delirium in ICU-A: attention and care as a team", which will be structured in booklet format. Thus, the conclusion of the Guidance Manual is expected to provide support for health education, serving as a resource for teams training and educational spaces, such as multidisciplinary rounds.
