COPING WITH COVID-19 BY NURSES IN THE SUS
WORK AND ACCESS TO INFORMATION IN A MUNICIPAL CONTEXT

The objective of the study was to analyze the work and access to information of nurses in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic in the Brazilian National Health System (SUS), in a municipality in the southern region of Brazil. This is a case a holistic case study with a mixed approach. The study included 22 of the 41 nurses who worked in the municipality where the study was conducted. 18, who worked in direct user assistance, answered a structured online questionnaire (41 closed and three open questions) and four, wich were in SUS management positions, answered a face-to-face semi-structured interview. The study pointed out that in the initial period of the pandemic, nurses adapted their own professional practices using guidelines from official health bodies, with emphasis on the technical note of the National Health Surveillance Agency no 04/2020. The surgical mask was indicated by the nurses with good rates of use, however, the N95 mask and the face shield were not used as much. If, on the one hand, nurses reported access to information about measures to be taken in the pandemic, the rates were lower in relation to how prepared they felt to apply them at work. The experience of the pandemic enlarged the suffering at work and showed that processes
of permanent education must be developed for the qualification of practices but also for the humanization of work.
