Abstract

The book Emerging Universities in Brazil: South-South perspectives and experiences, published at the end of 2021, the result of a collective production and the result of a shared research process, is a kind of manifesto in defense of the Brazilian Public University. Throughout his texts, the meanings and reasons for the existence of democratic institutions in Brazilian society are affirmed. It is a book produced by many hands, heads and hearts, it cherishes the desire to continue dreaming and practicing the construction and daily constitution of a democratic and democratizing university, a Public University, free and socially referenced. The work envisions and follows the experiences of four Brazilian universities, created in the recent period (2003 to 2014), namely: Federal University of Latin American Integration (UNILA), Federal University of Fronteira Sul (UFFS), Federal University of Southern Bahia (UFSB) and Federal University of Pampa (UNIPAMPA). The systematization and organization of this book gives visibility to the problem and the importance of universities for regional, social, political, economic and cultural development in the territories where they are rooted and belong.
