CONEXÃO TEXAS: OS MISSIONÁRIOS ESTADUNIDENSES E A OBRA EDUCACIONAL METODISTA EM PASSO FUNDO/RS (1920-1957)

Este artigo busca apresentar um breve panorama sobre a atuação dos missionários da Igreja Metodista, oriundos dos Estados Unidos, envolvidos na fundação e consolidação do Instituto Educacional Metodista, até 1942 chamado de Instituto Ginasial, em Passo Fundo/RS. As referidas personalidades foram fundamentais para o desenvolvimento da área da educação no município e mantiveram sua influência e ação mesmo após a autonomia nacional desta Igreja. Diante do enfrentamento de questões pontuais e do exercício de suas funções práticas, os metodistas apresentaram um modelo concreto escolar em um contexto ao mesmo tempo precário e favorável. O levantamento de informações para esta pesquisa foi realizado a partir de fontes nacionais e internacionais, incluindo artigos e periódicos de comunicação social, valorizando a leitura e a interpretação de recursos pouco explorados antes das transformações historiográficas ocorridas no século XX. Entender pormenores da obra metodista ajuda a compreender parte da história de Passo Fundo.

ABSTRACT
This article seeks to present a brief description of the actions of the missionaries of the Methodist Church, natives of United States, involved in the foundation and consolidation of the “Instituto Educacional Metodista” until 1942 called “Instituto Ginasial”, in Passo Fundo, located in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. The referred personalities were fundamental to the development of the educational area in the city and kept their influence and action even after the national autonomy from that Church. Facing punctual questions and the exercise of their practical functions, the Methodists presented a tangible scholar model in a context, at the same time, precarious and favorable. The survey of information for this research was carried out from national and international sources, including articles and press products, valuing the reading and interpretation of resources that were poorly explored before the historiographic transformations of the 20th century. Understanding details of the Methodist work helps to understand part of the history of Passo Fundo.
