NARCOTERRORISM: A CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF LEGAL APPROACHES AND THEIR SOCIOPOLITICAL IMPLICATIONS

Abstract

This study critically examines the concept of narcoterrorism through a comparative analysis of the legal and political experiences of the United States, Colombia, and Mexico. The methodology employed was qualitative, based on a literature review and document analysis, investigating how different national contexts shape the interpretation and application of this controversial concept. The research reveals that, although the term "narcoterrorism" has gained prominence in international political discourse, especially after the events of September 11, 2001, its practical application demonstrates significant conceptual inconsistencies that compromise both the effectiveness of public policies and the protection of fundamental rights. The results suggest that the political instrumentalization of this concept has contributed to processes of militarization of public security, often to the detriment of more balanced and sustainable approaches. It concludes that, while narcoterrorism may be useful as a rhetorical tool, its application as a rigorous analytical category requires greater conceptual precision and constant vigilance regarding its effects on democratic guarantees.
