Abstract

The analysis of sibling bonds among children in institutional care is a regular part of the professional routines of technical teams working in Institutional Shelters and Juvenile Courts. This study aimed to understand the procedures and perceptions of technical teams from institutional shelters and a Court of Justice in a state in the Southeast region of Brazil regarding the separation of sibling groups in adoption processes. Specifically, the study sought to: characterize the training of professionals involved in the analysis of sibling bonds; identify actions undertaken at the institutional level; and understand the professionals’ perceptions of how the institutions in which they work influence the quality and maintenance of sibling bonds in adoption processes. Fourteen professionals participated in the study, including eight social workers and six psychologists. Data were collected through a semi-structured questionnaire and analyzed using content analysis techniques. The results indicated that most professionals had never received training on the topic and reported difficulty in accessing literature on the subject. The study also identified the multidisciplinary nature of the actions taken by the professionals, who use everyday tools from their practice to work with sibling groups. Finally, the findings highlight the need for greater recognition of the professionals involved in adoption, particularly regarding their workloads, access to continuing education, and institutional support for their practices
