Abstract

This essay is centered on José Saramago’s novel História do cerco deLisboa (1989). It discusses the clear approximation and the intermingling of historyand fiction, pointing out the dialectic process of this mimetic relationship. In order todo so, the novelist makes use of resources such as alterity, intertextuality andmetafiction, revealing the text’s literariness as poetic work on discourse.
