Abstract

The memory of the cantorias-de-viola (folk poetry singing, accompanied by
guitar) in Brazil´s Northeast, has been conserved by some listeners called apologists -
people who admire impromptu popular poetry, keep in their memories parts of
performances and repeat them at other events, public gatherings and family meetings
where declamation happens.. The apologists continue to attend performances by their
favorite popular folk poet/singers in order to reproduce their singing as primary
orality. This happens in spite of the availability of audiovisual recording
technologies.
