Abstract

The presence of Surrealism in Brazil offers some controversies. There is a critical tendency (Candido 1992 and Paes 1985) that considers that this artistic expression did not have a real importance in the Brazilian literary scene. Presenting itself in a dispersed way by a few poets, only registered by the use of some surrealist techniques for the composition of its poems. Therefore, without the consistency of a significant "school" or "aesthetic trend". Contrary to this perspective, Sérgio Lima and Valentin Facioli (1999) affirm that surrealism has been present in Brazil since the 1920s and believe that Brazil and Latin America presented very favorable conditions for a fruitful relationship with organized and combative surrealism. To discuss the presence of surrealism in Brazil, we will use the poetic work of Jorge de Lima, a poet who, especially in his final lyrics, presents close contacts with the formal elements of surrealism.
