LANGUAGE ACQUISITION, LINGUISTIC CONTACTS, AND PARAMETRIC RESETTING IN BRAZILIAN PORTUGUESE

ABSTRACT: This article addresses language acquisition from the perspective of the Principles and Parameters Theory, considering the influence of linguistic contacts on the irregular acquisition of language and the process of parametric reanalysis of the Null Subject Parameter in Brazilian Portuguese. The proposal entails a discussion based on what we refer to as Parametric Sociolinguistics of Contact, an expansion of the proposal by Tarallo (1987) and Tarallo and Kato (1989), which intersects the Principles and Parameters Theory (CHOMSKY; LASNICK, 2021[1993]) with the Theory of Variation and Change (WEINREICH; LABOV; HERZOG, 2006[1968]). This proposition adds to the study of parametric reanalysis in Brazilian Portuguese the element of socio-historical formation of speech communities, particularly in situations of linguistic contact experienced during Colonial and Imperial Brazil. It investigates how the process of irregular acquisition (LUCCHESI; BAXTER, 2009; LUCCHESI; RIBEIRO, 2009; AUTOR; ALMEIDA, 2023) in the Afro-Brazilian context might have propelled the reanalysis of the Null Subject Parameter in this variety, given that language acquisition is influenced by social and biological factors, and plays a central role in linguistic changes.

Professora Plena (equivalente a Titular em universidades federais) na área de Língua Portuguesa/Linguística do Departamento de Letras e Artes da Universidade Estadual de Feira de Santana (UEFS), atuando em cursos de Graduação e de Pós-Graduação. É Doutora em Língua e Cultura pela Universidade Federal da Bahia (UFBA). Realizou dois estágios de pós-doutorado: um em Linguística, na Universidade Federal de Sergipe (UFS), com bolsa PDJ/CNPq, e outro em Língua Portuguesa, na Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (PPGLEV/UFRJ).
